As one of the assignments I have students describe what labor support means to them. These are so fun to read that I thought I’d include some here on my site.  Enjoy!

Throughout 4 of my own birth experiences and even a near death experience for both me and my baby at the hands of a hospital staff and care provider, I have decided to take a much closer look to why and exactly what really happened to me and my babies. Having since witnessed three births at a hospital and one home birth,  I realized I had been in the dark about options and birthing rights as a mother. Pertaining to maternity care, I have learned about America’s controversial maternity hospital care system and looking between hospitals deliveries against at-home, natural births. I believed and trusted blindly that the hospital and staff knew exactly what I needed when it came to having my babies. I have now learned that I missed out on some beautiful experiences and have had to heal because of what did take place in the hospitals. So I care about Labor Support in that I will and wish to share it with the world both by being a doula advocate and a doula.

As mothers-to-be embark on this exciting adventure, I wish to bring to a woman’s birth knowledge, options, insight, passion and love: birthing knowledge for before, during, and after labor; breastfeeding knowledge to bond and nourish her baby; options on what type of birth she desires to have with the knowledge in all aspects of the one she chooses; insight in that she does this on her own turf and her own wishes; insight by strengthening her mind and body to become in tune with her own body and baby’s within her; and love by sharing with her so she doesn’t have to fear birth. That it is a challenge but not an impossible one  — that the pain is a process of her body preparing for a beautiful birthing experience, sharing with her that there are ways to embrace birth with techniques and tuning herself for this amazing adventure in her life that she will soon be holding in her arms.   -Dawn
